Updates Standard Rider-Waite Cards with African/Caribbean Symbolism
Miami, FL – November 10, 2015 | Vudu Tarot, which offers a deck of Tarot cards illustrated in Afro-Caribbean style by the artist Monroe Rodriguez Singh, announced today that it is launching a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for a commercial production run of the card deck and associated products. Vudu Tarot reimagines the standard Rider-Waite tarot deck with rich Afro-Caribbean symbolism and authentic cultural references.
“My aim in creating and designing this unique deck was to cater to lovers of African/Caribbean illustration,” said Rodriguez Singh. “Very few Tarot decks are available with, rich, African-inspired illustrations and meaningful references. A lot of Tarot sets are created overseas, sometimes without good knowledge of the target cultures. The cultural references in them may be misleading or erroneous. All depictions and illustrations in Vudu Tarot are based off authentic characters and references that reside within the Afro-Caribbean culture.”
Vudu Tarot is a 79-card tarot deck meant for Tarot readers, African/Caribbean art enthusiasts, and Tarot card collectors. Its uniquely entwines standard Tarot card symbols and features with distinctive references and allusions. The deck features distinctive images with diverse characters that are inspired by Catholic saints and Afro-Caribbean myths. The backgrounds are derived from Afro-Caribbean pictographic ceremonial drawings. Monroe has worked diligently to flawlessly integrate these characters and references in a Tarot context.
Rodriguez Singh is an exhibited artist, designer and developer. He has been a professional Tarot Reader for 6 years as well as a member of the American Tarot Association and Tarosophy Tarot Association. He got his first Tarot deck at the age of 11. He has always been passionate about tarot cards and reading, studying Comparative Religion and Mythologies since he was 8. Today, he has more than 50 tarot decks.
The Vudu Tarot will have 79 unique, glossy tarot cards measuring 70 x 120mm, printed on 350gsm, smoothly coated paper with gold foil embedded in parts of the faces. The set comes with a 100-page Rulebook that conveys individual card meanings for proper understanding of the Tarot cards and using them for Tarot card reading purposes. The book is sized to fit the deck and written in a clear style that does not veer into condescension. Other extras sold with the card set include Prints, additional card sets, a “Make Yourself into a Major Arcana” option, a Tarot Card of Choice and a photobook. The deck will be printed by QPC Games. The book will be printed by Blurb. Both will be shipped out of Florida.
Vudu Tarot will mark Rodriguez Singh’s entry into the $2 billion global Tarot Card market. It is a field where clients often pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars to experienced readers. The Kickstarter campaign is set to raise $11,759 to cover working capital costs such as printing, packaging, shipping and promotion.
