“Viking Horde:Papercraft”, a fusion of accessible paper model making and easy-to-learn game play. Created by a Tasmanian company, the Island state of Australia, launched with a bang on Kickstarter getting fully funded in less than three days. Now with under two weeks to go the campaign has hit the 200% funding mark.

With two stretch goals already unlocked, the focus for the campaign continues to be on achieving further stretch goals, to deliver extra value for backers and enrich the game with additional ship types and expansion packs.

The models in the “Viking Horde:Papercraft” game use innovative paper engineering designs that are pre-cut and completely glue-free, creating a model making experience that can be enjoyed by both young and old.

The paper engineering designs of the project are all about minimising the tedium and frustration of paper model making and maximising the enjoyment and quality of the final product. The paper model Longship kits have been through more than a dozen design iterations – continually refining the structure of the product, ease of assembly and visual appeal.

In addition to the pre-cut models, the project also offers Print-and-Play versions of the game models and rules. These are slightly simplified versions of the core kits, that require printing, cutting and glueing.

Mr Walker highlights that “these projects may be considered niche, but obviously this success highlights that the scale of the internet audience makes even these small vertical markets a powerful financial opportunity”.

Mr. Walker reflects that the direct-to-consumer opportunity has previously been of great benefit to the studio with the iTunes app store, “Apple revolutionised the ease by which we could sell games for tangible profit, and now crowd-funding has established a new precedent to do that in far more diverse marketplaces.”
