In most cases, upcycling products have a certain eco/bio touch and look. They are really looking used and somehow even old. But now, there is a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter on a product which has also been created with upcycled material, however in an unparalleled minimalistic, modern design: The UpcyLamps!

But how is it possible to create a high-tech futuristic lamp with a body just 2 or 3 mm thick, without any cables or wiring?

First of all, there is the upcycled material itself: It is called Dibond, a high-tech composite material made in Germany. It consists of a PE kernel, covered by two aluminum layers with a thickness of just 0,3 mm. But this is enough to transport the low voltage (12V) current, and that’s why no wiring is needed at all.

Secondly: The lighting unit consists of the latest Chip-On-Bord (COB) LED panels. These Panels are so slim, they are completely integrated into the lamp body, so the lighting unit itself is not visible at all, only the protective acrylic plate can be seen.

Thirdly: The first two points allow to create this unmatched minimalistic lamp design. But this has also to be created! Michaela Kresse studied Architecture, and she is a designer of household items, furniture, and even houses. Her ability to see even complex object structures in 3D even before they are being drawn, enables her to create these unmatched elegant design objects. Together with her husband Axel she founded the design Label UpcyDesign, because they are both thrilled by minimalistic Design, but also by responsiveness for the Environment.

What are the plans of UpcyDesign if there campaign was successful? Michaela: “First of all, we’ll be building the UpcyLamps, because we’d like to ship the product as soon as possible to our backers, who made all this possible. But the desk lamps DeskA and DeskB are just the beginning. We already have plans for future lamps series in the same material, since Dibond is just perfect also for bigger lamps in a similar minimalistic design. In addition, we have plans for products in the fashion area, but these plans are still secret!”
