University of Houston Alumni Sets Sights on Helping Future Scholars

HOUSTON, TX – January 8, 2015–Each year, over one million students worldwide, suffer in the classroom due to insufficient space provided on school desks. In an answer to their problem, crowd-funding campaign, Desk Extender, launched to provide those students relief. But with only a week away from the campaign’s close, and support little-to-none, has America turned a blind-eye to supporting its children’s education?

Recent University of Houston college graduate and inventor, Devin J. Reeves, has created a product geared towards helping kids do better in class. The unit itself is a clever attachment that goes onto the side of students’ desks, giving them more space to use in-or-out of the classroom. It’s lightweight and durable, easily-portable, and even contains storage for students to carry their supplies. Its easy-to-slide on/off feature makes using the Desk Extender a cinch for users of all ages. Even more of a plus, it’s all made here in the US.

But as simple and practical as the product is, Desk Extender’s Kickstarter campaign to improve the quality of the classroom, is truly in need of a miracle to make this successful. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there are approximately, “71 million students attending schools ranging from K-12, to 2-4 year colleges and universities in the US alone.” If just 1% of those students were affected by this lack of desk space, that means over 7 million students will continue to suffer each year when products like Desk Extender continue to go unseen and unheard of.

This, is that diamond in the rough. This, is a clear example of a very simple solution, solving a very real and present problem. Unfortunately for Mr. Reeves and his team, this problem is looking to stay unresolved without the financial support and backing the campaign so desperately needs.

With the complexities of the social media and networking world, and a lack of funding, it’s no wonder why Desk Extender is having a rough time making a name for itself, as it fights its battle for mainstream media’s attention.  The campaign ends January 17, 2015, and clearly shows an instance where students are devoting themselves to helping other students. The time to invest in our children’s futures is now, and we’re glad to see that it took only one determined student, to come up with a solution for the bettering of his fellow future scholars.
