Late Nights at the Movies is a timeless film noir short film set in a cinema. An assassin awaits the messenger from her latest client.

We need your help to raise enough money to be able to make this film. We need money for transport, food for the actors and crew, insurance etc. It is a small budget as we will be borrowing alot of things and getting our locations for free. Ultimately we will take this film to film festivals!

Late Nights at the Movies is about Livien, a professional killer, who goes to the late night film screenings to unwind and hide away from her job, her clients and anyone else who is after her. Somewhere along the line she ended up working for an organization and signed the wrong kind of contract. Middleman Jack meets with her at the movies and tells her what to do and where to go. At first this was an intrusion to her, at the place she calls her sanctuary, but over time Jack and Livien have become more than just colleagues. This complicates matters however, as Livien struggles with her feelings whilst trying to protect the one she cares about.

We have some amazing rewards for backers such as film art cards painted by 4 different artists, a film zine with drawings, photographs and additional stories. We also have badges, tees and tote bags to give away and of course a credit in the film! You will be a film producer.

From the writer Katie Hogan (and co-director) “Like all great stories, ‘Late Nights at the Movies’ was an idea that came to me at 2am one morning. After writing all night I was running out of steam. I wanted my character to be something unexpected and I really wanted to write my own version of a hitman/assassin story. I thought back to all the times I had been in the cinema, a perfect location for a clandestine meeting to take place, and imagined that this character would go to late night showings to escape her ‘day job’. Slowly, slowly, the character of Livien was born. At first the story was meant to be told across a series of short stories, but after a few people telling me ‘this would work great as a film’ I adapted it for the screen. The film is inspired by the genre Film Noir and of course, stories about hitmen and assassins.”

From the co-directer and editor, Emily Attwood- “Katie often sends me over her stories and short scripts. This one cinematically was definitely something special. You could feel the atmosphere just reading it, see the lighting, the halo of light lining the back of Livien’s head from the projector and smell the smoke filled air from her cigarette as the smoke circled above her head, the flickering screen illuminating her face. The dialogue was on point as usual for Katie. Concise whilst packing a few punches. There was also something tender about it that I wanted to explore. A woman assassin who on the surface has a thick skin, but also has touching, challenging moments. Usually in films it feels like they have to be one or the other, always 2-dimensional.

I love how, although the characters feel quite real, it is like they are living in the moment for us. It is as though Livien has always been sitting in that cinema the moment we see her, waiting for us and perhaps Jack but she doesn’t know it. All the little details make it feel not quite real, it’s a different world, a different place and it is timeless. We don’t know when or where they are and I like that. It makes it feel truly cinematic.”

We will be filming at our local cinema which is a recently savedd from destruction refurbished art deco single screen. It is beautiful and would be perfect for our film noir!

We also have a party scene at a bar moments before the new year begins. We will be recruiting locals as extras!

This short is a dream for us. It will be the first project we have worked alone as Raar! Films. We are a partnership with the same hard work ethic and love for film and filmmaking. This project will be a showcase for what we can accomplish together and give us something truly superb to show to investors for a feature film in the future. We can’t do it without your help though!
