“Th’ Burning” was written and conceived by Susan McCain, along with creative consultant, Jason Wright, and produced by Laura Lundy Wheale.  The play takes place on Mother’s Day 1961 near Anniston, Alabama.  What happened on that day in Anniston, when a young black girl, Jo, and her white comrade, Liz, confront the violence ignited by the ‘Freedom Riders’ journey through a racially divided South still burns at the heart of our reconciliation.

The story begins as these two young girls get ready to go to church to celebrate the day.  Jo watches her mother in a world where racial inequality is being turned upside down.  Liz similarly watches her mother’s world turned upside down by matters of a more personal nature.  The scene is set as the so-called “Freedom Riders” arrive by bus in Anniston only to be met by a pro-segregationist mob.  An unwelcoming mob.  A violent mob unwilling to accept the rules of a new world.  The Freedom Riders could not anticipate what was about to unfold.  Despite being exposed to such racial violence throughout their lives, Jo and Liz find strength in each other to endure this turbulence.  Through their honesty and resilience, we see the burning inside them to make the world a better place.

The play is an honest and riveting story that moves audiences and brings people together.  Help us take this authentic Southern piece to NYC!  For more information, visit our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TheActingStudios, or our website at theactingstudios.com.
