A new product which may sound like an oxymoron, is being brought to market by two Portland entrepreneurs in the New Year. Oregon based Bootleg Botanicals has announced the launch of a Kickstarter campaign in support of a new line of spice blends for infusing liquor.
Described by founders Ryan and Melanie Belshee as “a tasty alcoholic treat without all the unwanted ingredients found in store bought flavored spirits,” Bootleg’s campaign begins on January 29th and will run until February 28th.
Based on the infusion principal used to transform liquor during the days of Prohibition, Bootleg’s botanical blends transform base neutral grain spirits using an age-old process called Maceration. Instead of distilling liquor which can be dangerous and is illegal to do without the proper licensing, Bootleg alcoholic infusions give aspiring Mixologists a “safe, fun way to experiment at home.”
According to the company, Bootleg’s blends are comprised of certified organic herbs and spices sourced from throughout the world. Bootleg Botanicals owners attest that, “the blends are completely natural, devoid of harmful dyes, chemicals or excessive amounts of sugar.”
The Kickstarter campaign offers backers an exclusive first taste of one or all of Bootleg’s signature recipes including an infusion blend based on the mysterious “green fairy” beverage known as Absinthe. This traditionally distilled spirit was allowed back into the US market in 2007 after being banned throughout the world for over 100 years. Other alcohol infusions include a “Mad Men worthy” Old Fashioned, two varieties of Gin and a “kick you in the keister” Cinnamon Whisky to name a few.
