Huntington, WV – In July 2015, James Boggs launched an Indiegogo campaign for Stars and Gay Bars, a project that aims to support gay pride and southern pride all with one satirical bumper sticker or T-shirt!

“The use of satire is a great way to get a message across,” explains the creator, “While this project is intended to promote gay rights and equality for all, it is also meant to give pause about how the use of symbols impacts our society and the feelings of others.”

On June 26 2015, the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot ban same-sex marriage. Although the decision was divided, this makes the US the 21st country to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide. This campaign is satirically making use of the “Stars and Bars” symbol, which has historical connotations of oppression and is often used by hate groups, to show support of LGBTQ and equality for all.

The artist will be donating 20% of the net proceeds to a national LGBTQ non-profit organization working for equal rights. Despite the recent legislature, James Boggs knows that there is still a long way to go. In fact, several organizations have been trying to disassociate from the Confederate Flag for a while in the hopes of improving the their image when it comes to diversity.

“I expect to get a variety of reactions and opinions due to the controversial nature of the topics. This is as much of a social experiment as it is an art project,” says Boggs, “Ultimately, this is satire, so try not to take it too seriously.”

In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards including a digital download of the designs for personal use for $2, a durable weatherproof 4” x 2.5” Stars and Gay Bars sticker for $3, a 4” x 4” Southern Gay Pride sticker for $5, and more! Backers can also pledge $12 to receive all three 4” x 4” stickers, $25 for all seven sticker designs, and $20 for a Southern Gay Pride or Gay Rebel t-shirt.
