Somnium Entertainment is an up-and-coming independent game development company established in December 2012. This Ireland-based company aims to design games for multiple platforms, like PC, tablet, mobile and console.
The name Somnium came from the Latin word for “dreams” and this is what their company is all about. Somnium Entertainment wants to build games from the ideas of the people who will actually play them. “There is no better fame than a game that is built by the people that will play it. We want our company to be one that will listen to the gaming world and take their ideas and mold them into games that they will love to play and enjoy…We want our company to put every dream together and produce games that will capture the minds of everyone.”
Lockdown
Somnium is currently working on its first project, Lockdown, a game of intelligence and quick decision-making under pressing circumstances. It is a first-person shooter survival horror game set in a period just after World War II. Players will portray the Scientist in the game. The Scientist is working on a highly-secured government bunker, where he is studying a classified, hazardous enemy chemical: Element_zero_six.
The action starts when a biological accident occurs while the Scientist is working on controlled tests. Element_zero_six have evaporated into on airborne substance and begins to spread a mysterious and deadly infection throughout the lab and the bunker.
Players will survive this game by solving clues and puzzles the Scientist will encounter throughout the various places in and outside the bunker. Exclusive weapons, maps and armory packs will be available in the in-game store. The social aspect of the game allows you, as a player, to compete with friends by setting high scores.
The Indiegogo Campaign
Somnium Entertainment, through its team consisting of Alan Flannery and James Whelton (Founder of Coderdojo), has launched an indiegogo campaign. This crowd-funding effort is primarily aimed at completing the development of Lockdown. From here, they can grow their company, expand their market strategy and inch towards the completion of their company targets.
The gaming company wants to cater to the cross-platform gaming world and to provide games that will be used not just as a hobby or distraction. Somnium Entertainment would also like to develop and release games that cater in the areas of education, training, sports, army, and many more.
As part of their crowd-funding campaign goals, the proceeds would also go to developing for the PS3, PS4 and Xbox platforms. Somnium plans to collaborate with global gaming companies and using high-quality game engine software to provide state-of-the-art games to the gaming aficionados worldwide.
