March 9th, 2018 — smartQED has announced its Crowdfunding campaign to raise its first external round of capital. The company focuses on helping IT Ops & DevOps teams in the enterprise solve complex problems faster.
In today’s computing world, rapid incident response is more critical & complex than ever before. Architectures and applications have evolved to handle millions of users, and thousands of transactions per hour with high reliability and 24×7 availability. Typically, problem investigations nowadays involve multiple teams with different subject matter expertise all working together to come to a shared understanding of what is going on and how they should try to fix it.
An SRE for a large Silicon Valley SaaS company shared his experience of this process. He mentioned that it was nearly impossible to get an accurate picture of the investigation status. Bringing in new SMEs was required but difficult, as someone had to explain to them the current status – what had been seen and done already and what remained to be tried out. This took up valuable time during the incident response process.
Another problem commonly faced amongst IT Ops & DevOps teams is how to re-use knowledge efficiently. Most enterprises have a process in place for writing knowledge articles that try to capture what caused the problem and how it was resolved. But how much of this knowledge is actually used during a high- pressure war room? According to Terry Gallagher, a seasoned Crisis Manager for large enterprises that has now joined the smartQED executive team – 80% of the knowledge articles that his team wrote remained unused/unread. On top of that, these articles were time consuming and tedious to write, taking time away from other important tasks. In many cases, the team faced difficulties in remembering the exact steps taken to resolve the issue and find the root cause, resulting in incomplete information in the knowledge base.
smartQED is using an innovative approach to solve these IT Ops/DevOps pain points. Its product provides:
- A self-learning, visual workbench for collaborative cause analysis that is more efficient than linear text-based communications. This allows enterprises, especially those with large operations teams, to streamline and enhance their collaboration workflows.
- A powerful recommendation engine that automatically suggests possible causes and solutions to a problem. The recommendation engine uses data that is gathered from the collaborative workbench, but also aggregates and analyzes information from public sources (such as Stack Exchange) and internal company knowledge bases.
