“Our goal is to offer affordable personal wellness and home monitoring devices for smart phones, starting with the iOximeter, the first pulse oximeter powered through the audio jack that works on both iPhones and Android phones,” said Yale Zhang, Safe Heart USA’s CEO. “We want to be at the forefront of the new focus on personal wellness brought on by the ‘quantified-self movement’ and the Affordable Care Act, as well as become a technology leader in the mobile health arena.”
Originally conceived in 2009, the iOximeter is pulse oximeter for smart phones. A pulse oximeter is a device that measures a person’s blood oxygen saturation and heart rate. The primary features also include alarms to indicate when values are abnormal, and the ability to record and chart results over time. The key differentiators for the iOximeter are: It is powered through the headphone jack, it is the only pulse oximeter that works with both iOS and Android. There are no batteries to charge, no special ports to use, which allows the phone to be charged while using the iOximeter. Future plans include an open API whereby third-party mobile app developers can activate and use this device as a part of their wellness platform. Research and development began in earnest in August of 2012 and the first prototype was created in July 2013.
After the conclusion of this crowdfunding campaign, iOximeter will be offered for retail at an initial MSRP of $99 for the sports and aviation markets in the US starting in March of 2014. Amazon.com will be the first retail channel for this product. FDA clearance for this product is anticipated to be obtained by 4th quarter of 2014, with CE clearance by the 3rd quarter of 2014. Worldwide distribution is expected to begin by 3rd quarter of 2014.

About iOximeter
A Pulse Oximeter is a device that measures the pulse rate (heart rate) and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) of a person. This measurement is achieved by a probe that shines a light of two different frequencies through the finger and a sensor that measures the light absorption. Traditionally, this data is sent to a tabletop or handheld unit which then calculates and displays the data. The iOximeter consists of a sensor that runs through a smartphone’s audio jack and a software app that performs the calculation. The software also records the data so the user may chart over a period of time, and in the future, send it to his or her doctor or insurance company as a part of an overall wellness platform.
