Small but Mighty is an illustrated children’s book depicting a mother’s emotional journey as she cares for her critically ill infant in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This book is written in the first person, as the new NICU mother shares in her infants triumphs and challenges.

Every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born prematurely, requiring prolonged and critical care in the NICU. Not only is this a source of enormous emotional distress for new mothers, but lengthy hospitalization of these preterm infants often results in long-term linguistic difficulties, including speech and language delays, reduced grammar comprehension, poor reading comprehension and diminished accuracy in writing.

Emerging research demonstrates that reading to preterm babies improves brain development, and results in advanced language skills, vocabulary, and reading proficiency, a strong predictor of high school graduation and career success as adults.

Mothers of children in the NICU often report feeling helpless as it can often be weeks or months before they’re able to participate in basic newborn care. Reading to their children provides them with a sense of purpose, knowing that they are playing an important role in their infant’s brain development.

This book provides an emotional outlet for mothers of premature infants, validating the grief, joy, and unconditional love that comes with the birth of a critically ill child.

Picture a new mother, sitting next to critically ill baby’s isolette, feeling helpless and anxious. Imagine her being able to read this precious tale to her newborn, offering comfort and supporting healthy development.
