This week saw the release of the Indiegogo campaign for the short thriller film “The White Room”. However, later that same day Sachin Patel, the screenwriter of the film, revealed how long he spent writing this film to friends and fellow script writers and they weren’t impressed. It was revealed that Sachin spent roughly 7 hours a day for 20 days, equalling 140 hours, writing a screenplay for a 15 minute short film.
“This film has a very complex story line which will eventually be part of a much bigger film series.” says Sachin.
He also shared a copy of the first draft of the film and the final draft of the short film to another screenwriter he knows quite well. Usually a film script will go through several drafts where there are slight alterations. In this case Sachin had completely rewritten the script more than half a dozen times. When we say rewritten, we mean entire plot changes, characters and locations. If you were to look at the first draft and final draft, you would not think that they came from the same idea. This is what Sachin had to say about it.
“Your first idea will never be your best. As an artist, I don’t think I’ll ever be satisfied with my own work. The day I say I am happy with what I’ve created will be the day I achieve perfection either on a script, movie or other artistic work that I do.”
The film was inspired by a documentary that Sachin watched on mental health and the negative impacts it has on one’s life. Originally, he thought about writing a documentary film but later decided that he’d like to put his own twist on it and base it on fictional characters.
