BowboardTM, LLC., located in Clearwater, FL, launched a unique product that revolutionizes ride-on devices. The BowboardTM merges a bow, frame and spiral gearing mechanism that moves you forward when stepping on the bow. While it shares elements with bicycles, kick scooters and longboards, its main method of propulsion is completely new.
“There’s no pedals, no chains, no motor, no batteries, no sprockets,” explains CEO Brian Gallagher, “It’s just gravity and you.”
When riding the BowboardTM, its patented technology converts the downward pulse into forward motion. One of the benefits is that there are different ways to ride it. You can ride with both feet for the entire ride (bowboarding), or you can ride it longboard style with an alternating step and kick. Typically the rider uses both the bow and kicking to initiate speed, and then switches to bowboarding for cruising; top speed can reach around 12-15 mph with a modest effort.
The underlying idea behind the development of the BowboardTM was to design a product that would be both fun and fast to ride, while also possessing that “cool factor” kids demand. What makes a BowboardTM unique is in how the rider’s weight and bouncing motion is converted to forward propulsion. Today, a typical wheeled kick scooter has a rigid flat riding deck that the rider stands on and then uses one leg to push the device forward with great effort with limited speeds achieved. In stark contrast, a BowboardTM deck is a flexible bow shaped fiberglass platform that the rider bounces on, and it’s the flattening motion of the bow that produces the forces need to drive the unique Spiral Drive Gear (SDG).
After flattening the bow deck, the bow automatically rebounds upward in readiness for another downward power stroke, or the rider can stop the rebound and hold the bow flat to ride it like a regular kick scooter. Only with the BowboardTM scooter do you have the unique ability of either “bowboarding” (bouncing) or the traditional “kick or go” method like with most other scooters.
The BowboardTM combines both what kids and parents want most out of a ride-on device designed for outdoor use. It’s fun yet easy to use, while also keeping riders participating in a healthy activity.
Another interesting fact of the BowboardTM is that it can actually be used to travel from place to place similar to that of a long board or bicycle. With its fold down handle and ease of portability, the rider can also use it as a commuter vehicle to efficiently get around campus or to use to travel to work if you live in the inner city.
After seven years of hard-work and dedication, the team behind BowboardTM is ready to reveal it to the public. The BowboardTM project was launched on the crowd-funding site Kickstarter.com to give everyone the chance to get in on the ground floor of innovation.
