In addition to maintaining wellness of the body, Chicagoans can now explore nourishing the most important part of themselves: their soul. Friday, August 15 marks the launch of Rooted, a self-expression center that provides fitness for the soul. Through experiential classes and workshops of creative activities and art forms, Rooted encourages connection with yourself and others in an environment free of judgment.
“Rooted is a unique place that provides a safe setting and tangible tools for people to discover, embrace and connect with their thoughts and feelings,” says Rooted founder Shruti Sekhri. “Many people visit the gym and eat right to promote physical wellness; now, Rooted helps to maintain fitness for the soul. Instead of having to be a certain way to please everyone else, you can simply be who you are. We believe authenticity – allowing yourself to be vulnerable – is an under-utilized outlet we can all benefit from.”
Housed in a 2,000-sq.-ft. organic, inspiring, and peaceful space in the Wicker Park neighborhood, Rooted creates an environment free of expectations for people to take part in classes and workshops that help them to access feelings through experiential and creative activities. The sessions will engage, rather than provide instruction, and are offered in the following modalities: visual art (painting, drawing, collaging); music (instrumental, jam session, vocal); movement (dance); drama (improvisation, games); and language (writing, storytelling). The goal of attending classes is not to master a technique, advance in skill, or produce pieces of art, music, or writing; rather, the intention is to brave vulnerability and explore the freedom of being yourself.
The company recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $26,700 to help fund the project and involve the public in the Rooted community. To learn more and donate to the center, visit www.kickstarter.com.
