The feature documentary film capturing the work of Compagnia della Fortezza launches Kickstarter campaign.
Volterra, Italy – New York filmmaker Inaya Graciana Yusuf is pleased to announce the launch her first ever crowd-funding campaign to bring The One and The Many production to completion. Yusuf is excited to bring this film to its final production stage, but is seeking help from the local audience to make it so. Contributors will help cover the last round of filming—providing means for crew payment and production expense.
“I am very excited to make this documentary,” says director Yusuf. “It is not very often that one gets an opportunity to engage, document and live the creative process with inmates first hand. Compagnia della Fortezza has really shaped my thoughts on what a prison rehabilitation program can be and consecutively, what a prison environment could potentially become.”
The One and The Many, a stylized, playfully constructed, documentary feature, explores the unlikely collaboration between playwright and theatre director Armando Punzo, and one of Italy’s oldest, most beloved, incarcerated theatre troupes, Compagnia della Fortezza at Volterra Prison. The film captures the profoundly transformative process of Punzo’s work with actor-inmates, most of whom had never previously performed, to produced whimsical, witty, and satirical experimental theatre, which also incorporates elements of traditional Italian theatre.
An Italian inmate comments, “We are invited to embark on a journey and are given the foundation to grow. Armando’s work in prison is humbling, but his push for a stable theatre outside prison is what makes him a great mentor.”
The deadline for the funding campaign is 9pm on October 9th. If funding is successful production will continue immediately to be ready for spring/summer 2015 launch.
