Director Paul Fleschner is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo to fund production of “Piercing the Veil,” a stirring and emotional documentary focused on his Uncle Larry’s experience with cancer and the family’s response to his illness and suffering.

Fleschner explains, “The film features the late Marie Kevin Tighe, S.P., the vice-postulator for the successful Cause of Canonization of St. Mother Theodore Guerin, the first Saint from Indiana and Foundress of the Sisters of Providence. Sister Marie Kevin, or “SMK” as we fondly called her, became a close friend and spiritual director of my Uncle Larry; and one of my favorite scenes in the film is when she offers him spiritual direction at his house — exactly 3 weeks before he passed away — and she eloquently articulates to him the crux of our situation:

“Birth, Life, Suffering, Death, Resurrection. We all go through the same steps.”

This film features both Catholic and Protestant family members; it interweaves their heartfelt responses to suffering close at hand. And the underlying story speaks to all denominations, perhaps all traditions — anyone struggling with a crisis of faith. Sister Marie Kevin draws from the rich tradition of Mother Theodore, the saint that said, “Put aside all uneasiness about the future. Place yourself gently into the hands of Providence.”

I think this film could strike a chord with so many people, could help so many — and that was my Uncle’s intention when he agreed to make the film; when he agreed to open up his life at its most vulnerable, and be filmed through the end. The film gives hope to those that suffer.

I’ve already put seven years and considerable financial resources into the production of this film, and need another $154,000.00 to properly finish it and “get it out into the world” where it can do the most good. It takes real dollars to make a real film with a real marketing budget to spread it far and wide. I can’t think of a better film to do that for, than this one.

The remaining film production costs include:

$38,500 Post-Production
$38,500 Domestic Marketing
$77,500 Global Marketing / Foreign Language Versions

I need your help to cover these costs and to spread this campaign. But I don’t expect your help without giving you something in return. I am partnering with the Sisters of Providence and a Carmelite Monastery to provide many Perks for your support. Please share our campaign with friends and family to help us reach our goal and spread the word about this film world wide. Thank you!
