Eighteen months ago we had the idea of producing a “Reusable Candle”. We came up with the idea of the “Picandle”.
Most wax candles last for a few hours, or a few days (if you’re lucky enough to find a good jumbo candle), and they are usually thrown out long before they melt completely.
We wanted to find a way whereby a lit candle won’t melt as it burns, is durable, and won’t need to be thrown out. The idea we came up with is a brand new concept called the “Picandle”.
Finally, after a lot of attempts to create a prototype, we finally did it. The “Picandle” prototype is made of plastic material (polycarbonate), molded into a container, and is cut by a special machine.
The inside of the container is filled with special durable wax that can sustain a perpetual flame, and won’t melt.
A transparent photo is printed on the container. This photo can be of a wedding, a vacation, a birthday, or of any personal event important to you. When the Picandle is lit, the whole photo glows from the flame, and emits a magnificent radiance as if there’s a flame within the container.
A small amount of Lamp oil is poured into the top compartment. The main benifits of using lamp oil is that it’s colorless, odorless, smokeless, and looks exactly like water. It also produces a nice even flame. A small amount of lamp oil can burn for 8-10 hours.
The wick we’re using is made of fiber glass, which never burns out – so it never needs any replacement.
Any personal photo can be printed on the “Picandle” as long as it meets our standard photo size requirements (Smartphone, Digital Camera etc.)

Timeline:
Our project will run on Kickstarter for 34 days.

Why Kickstarter?
After completing the prototypes shown on the video, we still have to complete the Picandle by adding a special cover to the bottom of the container to insure the internal wax won’t spill out. We also need to strengthen the wick holder to insure it’ll stand straight at all times.
We recalculated our numbers and managed to decrease our funding goal, but low-volume manufacturing of the Picandle is still quite expensive. There’s no technology risk here, but we need to re-design the manufacturing line so it can meet the requirements of mass producing the Picandle once we get funded from Kickstarter.
We currently have to outsource the plastic containers. The company that can produce the containers for us has a low production capability, and they charge a high fee for every prototype we test. In addition to that we need a special laser printer to print the transparent images. In the future we want to purchase a plastic molding machine as well as a special laser printer. This will enable to produce the plastic containers and images by ourselves and save major costs.
