These Chickpea Chips by PEACASA bring a better way to snack, direct from the Mediterranean.
Toronto — Founded by Canadian youth entrepreneurs, PEACASA launched a new grain-free, gluten-free, vegan, and high protein Chickpea Chip in two distinct flavours on May 19th, 2020.
Made with chickpea flour, organic high-oleic sunflower oil, extra-virgin olive oil, sea salt, and black pepper, PEACASA Chickpea Chips have 8 grams of protein; 2x more than potato or corn chips, as well as 4 grams of fibre, and have up to 40% less net carbs than tortilla chips.
PEACASA’s two Chickpea Chip flavours include the original Sea Salt and the new Lime & Pepper, available exclusively on Kickstarter.
The idea for PEACASA started in the streets of Southern France in a city called Nice where they have been making wood-fired crepes from chickpea flour and olive oil for generations. Victor Courarie-Delage, co-founder of PEACASA, has been eating these chickpea crepes for years while growing up in the Meditteranenan. After meeting in university, Aaron Johnstone, co-founder of PEACASA, came to visit Victor in France which is when he tried these chickpea crepes for the very first time and the pair decided to re-invent this Mediterranean super snack as a light and crispy chip.
“Growing up between Ontario and the South of France, I always dreamt of bringing parts of the Mediterranean food culture to Canada. I wanted to show that simple, quality ingredients are all we really need to make healthy and delicious snacks,” said Victor Courarie-Delage, co-founder of PEACASA.
In March 2019, Johnstone and Courarie-Delage decided to pursue building the healthy snack business in the Toronto-area full time.
“Making Chickpea Chips by hand, we sold PEACASA at farmers markets and listened to feedback from every single customer. Despite being told by industry veterans that we needed to add rice or corn to make chips with chickpeas, we never gave up on our commitment to using only simple Mediterranean ingredients. We re-invented the way chips are made and fine tuned our recipe hundreds of times until Peacasa Chickpea Chips were light, crispy, and even more delicious than the warm chickpea crepes we first enjoyed in the street markets of Southern France,” said Johnstone.
PEACASA has secured funding from Toronto based start-up program, Futurpreneur, and is now looking to raise additional funds through crowdfunding site Kickstarter in order to build their first manufacturing facility for the official launch of the product. The PEACASA Kickstarter campaign launched on May 19th, 2020 and the company plans to start selling in retail stores and through their e-commerce site later this year.
