Moncton — Today, a Moncton start-up company has launched a 30-day crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Sum Good Foods Inc. is a local farm to freezer company that was founded in early 2021. Sum Good has experienced significant growth in their first 9 months of business with their flagship product, the fruit-first, hydrating freezie.

Pressed fruit is always the first ingredient in their freezies, which are combined with a blend of electrolytes to create products that are not only delicious, but are hydrating too. Sum Good products never contain any dyes, added sugars or natural flavouring. They’re all natural, from the farm to your freezer.

Sum Good is seeking $60,257 in pledges to fund their growth through the purchase of new equipment and the lease of a commercial food production facility located in Moncton, NB.

The start-up company was founded by two Newfoundlander entrepreneurs, Matt Pennell and April Glavine. Matt is an award-winning chef and has been featured on Chopped Canada, Canada’s Great Kitchen Party, and You Gotta Eat Here. April is the successful entrepreneur behind the award-winning Lean Machine Healthy Vending Machines Inc. Both as new parents, Matt and April saw a gap in the market for better-for-you products that taste great. Carefully crafting wholesome foods to fuel your family’s health is the purpose behind Sum Good.

About Matt Pennell: Matt was born and raised in Holyrood, Newfoundland, son of hard working, salt of the earth parents. Educated at the Culinary Institute of Canada (CIC) Holland College, Matt spent the next 10 years traveling and working in North America. This led to working alongside titles such as Michelin Star Chef in San Francisco, California and 4 Diamond Chef in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Always seeking a challenge, Matt has victoriously represented himself and Canadian provinces on stages such as Canada’s Great Kitchen Party, Canadian Culinary Championships (CCC) and Food Network Canada’s “Chopped Canada”. Other accolades include “Top 20 under 40” awarded to outstanding entrepreneurs and public figures under 40 years of age by The Moncton Chamber of Commerce. Matt co-founded his first businesses, Tide and Boar Restaurant, catering company, dinner theatre and wine bar in 2010, all under one roof at 700 Main St., Moncton, NB. Large scale event coordination and creating an incorporated business venture in restaurant consulting has been his focus since selling his first business in 2014. Being health, food and career focused is what motivates this entrepreneur to bring products and businesses to market that align with his core values.

About April Glavine: Originally from Happy Valley Goose Bay, Labrador; April now resides in Moncton, NB with her family. April has a passion for healthy living, nutrition, nature and staying true to her Newfoundland roots. It’s that passion which fueled her first venture in 2004 while studying at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, NS. Lean Machine Healthy Vending Service Inc launched its first location at the Halifax Grammar School amongst other locations in HRM, competing directly in a category dominated by global players. Lean Machine remained focused on its mission to make better-for-you food products more accessible at a number of high traffic locations. Through strategic partnerships and a newly established franchising network, by 2010 Lean Machine locations stretched across Canada from PEI to BC. April was selected to represent Nova Scotia at the 1st Young Entrepreneurs G8 Summit in Italy and at the HRH Royal Highness Young Entrepreneurs conference in Vancouver, BC to personally present to Prince Charles. In addition, Lean Machines has been awarded Small Business of the Year with the Halifax Chamber of Commerce. April has also represented Canada at the Young Entrepreneurs G20 Summit in France and Atlantic Canada has recognized Lean Machine as the #1 ethical company in the small business category.
