Little girls are born brave, with fearlessness, fire, curiosity and the knowledge they can be anything. That’s until society tells them otherwise. Data from the 2015 Always Confidence and Puberty Survey suggests that around 72% of girls feel like society dictates what they can and cannot do. Annie The Brave, launched on Kickstarter April 15, 2019, is a girls clothing brand created by Making Home Base founder Chelsea Coulston that offers STEM-inspired dresses to inspire bravery in little girls.
With a daughter whose dream is to be a scientist who studies fashion requesting a “science girl dress,” and the new-found knowledge of there not only being no pre-made dresses on the market, but also no fabric options to DIY it herself, Coulston decided to outsource. And realized there could be more to this. Not having these dresses on the market isn’t exactly a fashion emergency but having to tell a 6-year-old there is no science girl reaffirms what society tells females- those things aren’t for you.
Coulston chose to call the new company Annie The Brave to pay homage to her daughters. Annie, a combination of her daughters names, Peighton Anne and Millie, represents a goal for girls. That they can work towards anything, even being a scientist who studies fashion, and be super brave like Annie. The brave portion of the name was inspired by a TED Talk from Caroline Paul, one of San Francisco’s first female firefighters who shared how astonished people were at the mere fact of her just doing her job. After a routine fire call, she was praised by a male colleague who seemed surprise she ambushed a fire earlier in the day and put it out herself, and that’s when she realized that people didn’t think women could be brave. Women and girls can climb trees, play in the mud, operate a rocket ship and even fight fires.
Annie The Brave will launch on Kickstarter on April 15, with sales moving over to AnnieTheBrave.com on May 15. The brand debuted with three designs: Little Scientist, Under The Space and Girl In Space.
Each Annie The Brave dress is available in sizes 2-8 and will retail for $35. The collection features designs that are girly and whimsical, without compromising the STEM component.
“Annie The Brave is a company I wish was around when I was growing up. I was inspired by my own fearless daughter to really take the concept and bring it to market. Knowing that I couldn’t buy or make something she thought should already exist was the driving catalyst. Little girls can like things like space and sharks that aren’t necessarily girly, but still want to wear a dress,” said Chelsea Coulston, founder of Annie The Brave. “Annie The Brave promotes equal opportunity, encouragement, inspiration and support for little girls everywhere. I’m looking forward to growing the brand and bringing Annie to life.”
Coulston is no stranger to starting successful projects out of personal need. She started her blog, Making Home Base, when she and her military husband were trying to decorate their new rental home and there wasn’t adequate information available. She has developed e-books, hosted DIY workshops and collaborated with Home Depot and Better Homes and Gardens.
Launched on Kickstarter April 15, 2019 in three patterns.
