Cora Neil Design Launches a Kickstarter Campaign to Fund Hanging Planters
AUGUST 28th, 2014 – Los Angeles-based environmental designer Cora Neil is launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of HEDGE, a collection of colorful, modern hanging planters tailored for urban living. www.hedgeoutdoor.com
The collection is notable for its versatility, ease of use, clean geometry, and craftsmanship. The planters are suitable for almost any living space and can be used either indoors or outdoors. “An apartment window can become a stunning green space, a kitchen wall can grow into an herb garden, a balcony can become an urban oasis, and a patio can be transformed into a secret garden,” Neil said.
HEDGE began as an element of a public garden space project Neil was developing while a student at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Neil said, “I was considering the way many people live today, with little to no outdoor space for a personal garden. I think this collection really addresses the need for the urban dweller to get close to nature on a daily basis.”
“I named the collection HEDGE because, traditionally, garden designers would define the property with a thick wall of carefully trimmed hedges. How do you do that with plants in an apartment or on a small patio?”
The planters are a combination of traditional craft and new materials. The frame is made of bent, powder-coated steel by craftspeople in Los Angeles. The insert, made with a sustainable coconut and latex material, is commonly used in hydroponics but is unique among home garden products. It provides great drainage for drought-tolerant succulents and cactus, herbs, ferns, and any plant that thrives in a small pot.
Each HEDGE planter is named after a pioneer woman of landscape and garden design: Gertrude Jekyll, Beatrix Farrand, Marian Cruger Coffin, and Florence Bell Robinson defied the male-dominated field and created garden spaces that continue to be celebrated today.
The large and small pendants are designed to be suspended, while the mini pendants and wall trellis can be mounted on a wall. Matching hardware is included with each planter. Each HEDGE planter is available in tangelo, marigold, or fig.
The five-planter collection is available on Kickstarter as rewards for contributions towards the goal of raising $7500. The Kickstarter prices are lower than the future retail prices and “early bird specials” will save pledgers even more. There are also unannounced items in the Hedge collection that will be unveiled if the fundraising goal is reached.
