Play, development and compassion. Based on these three guiding ideas, ‘My Wings’, a new Swedish based lifestyle brand with California roots, has launched a unique charity program for children in need or recovering from difficult circumstances.
At its heart, ‘My Wings’ offers a simple, yet powerful product. A colorful series of shirts for 2 to 8 year olds, created in fairtrade factories using 100% organic cotton and featuring beautifully designed wings from dragons, butterflies, fairies and much more. The program’s founder Lee Giove explains why –
“In the cases of the children the ‘Giving Wings’ program has been created to help, we see them as having had their ‘wings clipped’ – through illness, social circumstances or many other reasons. However, a child’s imagination is a powerful thing. It inclines towards curiosity and fantasy and can create joy from the simplest of activities. These shirts and their wing design make a child’s imagination soar, taking them to a space of freedom and empowerment while supporting their recovery.”
Each shirt is accompanied by a ‘My Wings’ card and booklet, which includes guided activities for adults and children to engage in together. As well as developing confidence, self-esteem and creative exploration, These materials also create quality adult and child bonding time. All these are crucial factors in helping children with especially difficult emotional and physical trauma issues and were instrumental in the creation of ‘Giving Wings’, the program which will support children in healing around the world. Lee continues –
“For our launch, we have established fantastic relationships with the Shriners Hospital for Children in Sacramento, California and with “Pay It Forward Sweden” to create a program called ‘Giving Wings’. We’ve also created an Indiegogo page where donations can be made and full details of the program are available.”
Using the ”Pay It Forward” model, individuals, businesses, and other organizations can purchase winged shirts and the accompanying confidence developing materials. These will then be distributed to young patients at Shriners Children’s Hospital as well as to children in Sweden who are in trauma recovery. Marielle Peterson, Founder of Pay It Forward Sweden elaborates –
“By giving children their wings back, it means a lot. It’s a symbol for freedom and the wings instill so much hope. Just playing with wings symbolizes ‘I can fly wherever I want to’, nurturing the most important part of the spirit.”
Details on how to contribute to the program can be found below – and as Lee Giove concludes, every donation has enormous potential –
“The link between play, imagination and psychological well-being is well established. The ‘Giving Wings’ program recognizes this, offering you the chance to directly help the children who need it most through one simple but beautiful, life-changing gesture.”
