We know that it’s unhealthy to lather our body in chemicals to stop body odor, but until now it’s been the only option. SWIFF is the first alternative, an eco-friendly spray for clothes that stops odor-causers in their tracks. Many “natural” deodorants have 20 or 30 ingredients listed, with numerous synthetic alcohols and random small molecules. SWIFF on the other hand is just two ingredients – plant antioxidants and silver, both of which have been used medicinally for thousands of years to stop the things that cause odors, namely germs. And SWIFF goes on clothes, not on your skin.
The ingredients in SWIFF, gallnut extract and silver ions, are non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and sustainable. A decade of research on plant antioxidants has led to this colorless spray that can stick to any fabric or surface and last through the wash. Importantly, it’s completely odorless and does not have propellants, VOCs, or other chemicals, so it’s safe for people, pets and the environment. The focus on an eco-friendly and hypoallergenic formulation was driven by Dr. Richardson’s own skin allergies to numerous soap additives, deodorants, and fragrances. With assistance from his wife, Susanna Chan Richardson, this work was taken out of the lab and transformed into a household product. They wished everyone had a better option to stop odors, rather than just masking smells with harmful chemicals. This drove a minimalist approach to use the fewest ingredients possible, and with hard work and plenty of testing, they got it down to just two. Dr. Richardson tested it on his own shirts in the Tokyo heat and humidity and sent it to friends and family around the world to test. SWIFF finally means that people don’t have to slather odor-maskers, and other things on their skin in the hope to not smell.
“This is liberating for people with allergies or medical conditions,” says Dr. Richardson. “It’s ideal for anyone concerned about the chemicals they put on their skin or spray into the air around their kids,” says Susanna Richardson.
SWIFF was founded in 2021 by Dr. JJ and Susanna Richardson to improve people’s lives with the first long-lasting odor protection for clothes and everyday objects. Dr. JJ Richardson is a Florida-born, UF-educated, Australian-PhD currently at the University of Tokyo. An active athlete, he no longer stinks while playing golf, snowboarding, breakdancing, rock climbing, or biking to work. Susanna Chan Richardson is an Australian-born, Monash-educated expert in outreach, engagement, branding, and fashion. Together, they’re parents to an energetic child.
