Google “sg kopi and teh” and you will see many repeated images of KOPI O (coffee black) and KOPI C (coffee with evaporated milk) or old blog posts teaching you how to order KOPI and TEH the authentic way from local kopitiam (coffeeshop). Not that these articles are not useful; they are just slightly dated and repetitive.

This is where SingTat tries to be different. He has launched a Kickstarter campaign on T-shirts that have local KOPI and TEH flavours printed on them. What is original here is that he has designed a binary numbering system to systematically cover the common flavours, which numbers around 240. He hopes this method of describing each local flavour will help people get acquainted with those local terms and raise the interest of local coffee and tea culture. Hence, he also added a decoding table at the back of the T-shirt in English to maximise reach to an international audience. Tourists who are unfamiliar with the local scene might want to keep the local decoding table close-by for a quick reference or to point to the flavour at the front of their T-shirts for a start.

These T-shirts come in 2 colours: black or white. Those are neutral colours that go well with your causal wear. Pretty safe colours chosen by a computer geek who is more familiar with C++ and Java (geek alert – programming languages).

What stands out is that he has even created a few comic strips loosely based on these KOPI and TEH flavours. To his knowledge, he has not come across such attempts before.

In those comic strips he title “Overheard” (which he chose over “Eavesdrop”, fortunately), you discover that these characters behave in a certain way due to their flavours. For example in “CLIQUES”, the flavours with milk group themselves together while ostracising the one without. In “ENERGY”, the flavour with the most sugar gets hyperactive.

Overall, he has injected some fresh perspectives into the local KOPI and TEH culture. The campaign is currently still on (until 22 March 2017) and you still have time to back it and get your exclusive T-shirt.
