On October 7th, 2014, MC Fabrications launched it second Kickstarter campaign.  This time, for mini pen that is for those that are on the move.

What is a QDC Mini Pen?

Called the QDC Mini Pen, QDC comes from the device used to secure the cap which is based on an industrial air-hose female Quick-DisConnect, or QDC. The cap holds on to the mini pen and is only released when the outside of the cap is pulled back. This releases the mini pen when it’s needed and holds onto it when it’s not. Top that off with a split-ring and this mini pen is ready to be attached to anything and taken on the go.

Brass mini pen

Machined from solid 6061 Aluminum or 360 Brass, the mini pen body keeps it simple with a one-piece design. The G2 gel ink refill is held in place by a custom brass screw for easy access and replacement. A custom adapter for the fisher space pen refill will be offered as well.

At just 3.8″ with the cap, the mini pen is just the right size to attach to a keychain, purse, hiking pack, golf bag, or anywhere else a pen is needed on the go. A knurled grip provides maximum grip for spur-of-the-moment writing. The aluminum body sports a black hard anodized finish that puts up to abuse while the brass leaves its machined surfaces raw that look phenomenal when naturally tarnished.  MC Fabrications also has the ability to do custom materials, finishes, and grips.

Once prototypes were made, the mini pens were handed out to backers of the previous project as testers. One tester said, “I love the ability to have it on my keys and to know I always have a pen when needed.” Another said, “I really like that I don’t have to go the bottom of my purse for a pen.”

Why Kickstarter

In order to meet minimum requirements for anodizing and an initial purchase of the specialized caps, MC Fabrications has turned to Kickstarter once again. Though these can be manually machined in the MC Fabrications shop, the time and material needed would take away from keeping up with demand for other projects. By receiving the pens and caps ready to be assembled, costs can be kept down through bulk purchases and bulk anodizing. In reward for pledging, QDC pens will be sent out to backers once all the components are received and assembled, approximately in March of 2015.

The Kickstarter project is currently live and runs through November 7th, 2014.
