My current feature documentary is about Mid Florida’s Mid Century Modern Architecture. I’m in the pre-production phases of the first in a series of documentaries on Mid Florida MCM architects and their residential designs. Featuring the Sarasota and Central Florida areas.
My name is MarQ Morrison, and I grew up next door to Nils Schweizer (the Dean of Orlando Architecture) and the Schweizer family. Nils Shcweizer studied under Frank Lloyd Wright and was the key architect for the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Florida Southern College. As well as the only Frank Lloyd Wright home ever built, The Spring House, in Florida. So, at a young age I was introduced to Mid-Century Modern Architecture, and grew to admire the relationship it had with nature and bringing nature inside.
There are still quite a few gems left, in Florida, but many have fallen in disrepair or to make way for McMansions. A handful of the architects, from this era 1950-1970 are still alive and need to be interviewed while they are still with us. There are several books on this subject but there are no feature documentaries on Mid Florida Mid Century Modern Architecture and I plan to fill that void with my two part series.
The second documentary will be about the post Mid-Century Modern Architecture in Florida. The next gen architects and how they incorporated some of the design qualities from the Mid-Century Modern Architecture.
This is an incredibly unique style and time period in architecture history, and needs to be preserved. Some of the key architects to cover, Nils Schweizer, Ralph Twitchell, Paul Rudolph, Tim Seibert, Victor Lundy, Gene Leedy, Mark Hampton, Carl Abbott, John Howey, Lowell Lotspeich, Manfred Lopatka, Frank Sheehy, Roger Allen Leiben.
I’m reaching out for some help getting the word out on my Kickstarter Funding Campaign to produce the first film in the series. If you are interested can you help contribute and/or share amongst the community.
