Is it right or wrong to tell ‘therapeutic lies’ to dementia patients?
Therapeutic lying, or telling white lies is a way of saying things to avoid the painful truth in order to protect people with dementia from confusion and emotional turmoil. And each situation is different.
I wished I knew about ‘therapeutic lying’ earlier.
During the times spent with my grandma, who had dementia, she would often repeatedly tell us memories of her past, with a good mix of the present. And every time, we would bring her back to reality and correct her, but it always end with arguments and unhappiness. She passed away in 2013.
Short synopsis of “I Never Lie”
“I Never Lie” is a love story based on the idea of therapeutic lies.
Grandpa loves grandma, who is suffering from dementia, very dearly. And to prevent the constant reminder of the painful truth, grandpa took advantage of her memory and paints a beautiful recollection of her life with lies.
The story of “I never lie” revolves around the concern on caring for dementia sufferers, focusing on therapeutic lying. And I believe that this unique caring approach will help many others in terms of their perspective as a caregiver role.
“I Never Lie” means a lot to me, as a way to reconnect with my grandma. And I sincerely ask for your help to make this short film a reality.
