Read ‘em and Steep, launched March 1, 2017, is a librarian run startup dedicated to supporting small businesses, minority and female authors and entrepreneurs, and girls’ literacy. The subscription box offers several membership options from a one month gift box to a monthly recurring subscription.
Read ‘em and Steep was founded by librarian Jada Jones with the goal of providing literature and goods that are not regularly available or easily found. Each month, Jada and her small team will select a relevant popular culture theme and build the monthly box around it. Each box will include an independently published book selection sourced from an independent book publisher, a unique selection of tea or coffee sourced from the local Washington D.C. area and beyond, and three to five additional themed items.
Featured books will be written by diverse authors and will highlight the history and culture of diverse people. Tea and coffee will be selected from around the world, and will be rare and unique. Additional items will vary, but will include things such as journals, stationary, candles, writing and coloring utensils, coffee mugs, tea steepers, bookmarks, magazines, art, extra books and much more. Each box will also include a sweet treat. All of the items selected will be handmade and/or from small businesses. In addition, Read ‘em and Steep is a proud supporter of Room to Read, a charity that promotes literacy and works to remove barriers so that girls in developing countries can attend school. A Kickstarter campaign has been launched in an effort to secure initial funding and customer base.
