Labyrinthós, a 224-inch long maze puzzle in the form of a book, is now available from its creator via a pledge through Kickstarter.

Labyrinthós, a maze puzzle game in the form of a 28-page book that can be played like a board game, is now available for a limited time only via a pledge through the crowdfunding website Kickstarter. The maze puzzle book is available until October 20.

Labyrinthós is the labor of love by the artist Maciek Jozefowicz, who says that the book is meant to be much more than a simple maze puzzle. “Well, this maze puzzle is not simple. Its total length, if you add up all the pages, is 224 inches. That’s a looong maze,” says the creator.

What makes this maze puzzle uniquely rich is that it is both a piece of conceptual art and an expression of the creator’s philosophy.

As conceptual art, the book can be viewed as an post-modern, abstract coloring book. The artist created an abstract, densely woven, linear skeleton which is to be completed by the player who adds the color. Thus Labryinthós becomes an artistic collaboration.

And like any art of substance, Labyrinthos is a personal expression of the artist. “The maze doesn’t have dead-end paths in it,” explains the artist. “I loathe the idea of dead-ends. There are no dead-ends in life, just better or worse paths. Some paths lead to where you want to be, others do not. But all paths can be changed.”

That is one of the main themes of Labyrinthós as art: freedom of choice, freedom to choose your own paths.

And that is not the whole story of Labyrinthós expression. Another important message that the artist is attempting to communicate through this puzzle game is that there are different ways to get where you want to be. There is not any one right answer. There are multiple answers.

But the layers of Labyrinthós are an addition to what is after all a maze game. And what makes it a unique maze game is how the artist incorporates the maze into the book format. In addition to having densely interwoven paths that continue on from one page to the next, Labyrinthós also allows players to jump over multiple pages using “jump portals”.

The Jump Portals add complexity and variety to the maze that can be played in a traditional way in which a single player has to find his or her way from the beginning of the maze, the front cover, to the end of the maze, the back cover.

But Labyrinthós can also be played like a board game in which multiple players, each having their own copy of the book to mark, use dice to collect points and treasure while at the same time trying to find their way to the end.

And finally, there is the “Labyrinthós Love Story”, a two-player, one-book game-play in which two players begin at the opposite ends of the maze, one on the front cover, the other on the back cover, and they have to “find” each other.

The Labyrinthós game is available in five formats, each format is a unique maze puzzle that contains the same elements and game design. The formats are a 28-page hard-cover book (Labyrinthós), an 8-page booklet (Little Labyrinthós), and a 4-page folded card (Baby Labyrinthós). In addition, the artist has created a Labyrinthós Art Print and a Labyrinthós Triptych, a set of three prints that go together like adjacent pages of the Labyrinthós book..
