The Kamba people of Kenya have a saying, “if you educate a girl, you educate an entire village”. Regina Kiatu, President of Trinity Coffee Imports, is a perfect example of this philosophy. In 1996, local farmers of her village, pooled their resources to pay for her to attend college. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, and was later invited to attend St. Catherine’s College in St. Paul, MN. USA.
She said, “if it had not been for coffee, I would never have gone to school. It has helped me support my community, and help enable other girls obtain an education, while continuing this noble cause of, “no poor girl left behind.” With this education and business experience under her belt, the Trinity Coffee Corporation was born.
Since then, Regina’s primary focus has been in trying to figure out, “how do I give back to these farmers, and to my community, that has literally given me life!” Because to the Kamba people of Kenya, “Coffee means opportunity. Coffee, means life!”
Initially, she thought how nice it would be if she were able to raise enough money to annually support a handful of girls in their educational endeavors. But later she got a revelation, “why not raise money instead, to build my own K-12 grade school in Kenya? That way, we can provide free quality education to all of the young girls in our community and surrounding areas:” and so, here we are. Stage one of Regina’s vision.
