Mom of two designs first ever freezer for wipes after learning how Koala bears keep cool.
Orlando, FL August 7, 2014: The Friper is an insulated freezer that you can take with you for wipes you already have at home. Ever been outside on a hot sticky day? How nice would it be to wipe down with something cool and refreshing? Monica Magana, the inventor of The Friper, came up with the idea after reading an article in the BBC news about a study done on Koalas and things they do to cool off during extremely hot days.
According to the study published in the Royal Society journal Biology letters, scientists and researchers used thermal cameras to figure out how koala bears regulated their body temperatures. It was discovered that Koalas moved lower down towards the trunks of trees where the temperature was 7 degrees cooler than the top. They also pressed their bodies closer. In essence these smart koalas hugged trees to lose heat and keep cool.
“Koalas hug trees to keep cool. What can people do? I kept thinking about that,” said Monica. And then out of the blue, waiting in line at a theme park on a hot Florida day in July, she took a wipe out her bag for her son and the idea for the Friper was born.
You take wipes you already have, put them in the friper, freeze overnight, and you are ready to go. It’s not as good as hugging a tree but it’s refreshing to wipe down with a fripe. ( a freezing cold wipe.) Koala Camaraderie, the company behind the Friper hopes to take this project to the next level. The materials used to make the Friper are all made in the USA and a portion of profits will be donated to a charitable organization who works against deforestation and helps save the koalas.
In honor of Koalas, Koala Camaraderie with help from its mascot, Klover Koala, is launching a campaign for positive news stories. On August 20, 2014, people all over the world will be #koalaworthy by posting pictures of themselves hugging a tree and a friend.
Check out The Friper on Kickstarter.com, and you could be one of the first in the world to experience a fripe before it even hits the dictionary.
