Private school to serve both typical children and those with disabilities, seeks crowd funding support

Discover has launched a crowdfunding campaign on the website Indiegogo, which can be found at www.igg.me. The funds from this campaign will be used to prepare for the upcoming school year by securing an appropriate site and allowing for classroom preparations. The classroom will encompass both indoor and outdoor learning spaces, and will include interactive technology.

Discover Community School is slated to open in central Tampa (Ybor) and to accept students, kindergarten through 3rd grade, in the fall of 2014. Discover supports children of differing abilities with project based and hands on curriculum, with a focus on social skills and reading fluency.

The school’s mission is to provide a rich educational environment to every child with a very low teacher to student ratio. While there are private schools that offer a student centered environment, there are far fewer that are open to children with special needs. The school’s initial enrollment is limited to 12 students. Occupational and speech therapy will be available on campus. McKay scholarships will be available.

Discover will utilize the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to ensure that differentiated instruction is accessible to all learners, regardless of ability. This method of curriculum development gives students at different levels access to the same topics, as well as affording students a variety of ways to demonstrate their knowledge of a subject.

All children deserve to be included in a classroom that supports them and stretches them to reach their fullest potential. Discover Community School has partnered with local community organizations to support experiential learning, including participation in a children’s entrepreneurship opportunity with the Tampa Kids Market.
