A portable security system small enough to fit in the palm of a hand.  Use it for home security and for home automation.

Initium Labs today launched a Kickstarter campaign for Securmate, an innovative portable security system and home automation device.  First of its kind, Securmate provides a simple and minimal method to secure any dwelling without requiring any monthly fees.  Securmate is also scalable in a way that it can interface with popular smart devices to form a rule based automation solution.

“Mechanical locks only keep the honest people out yet current security systems are really geared towards people staying in permanent or long-term homes.  This leaves a large fragment of the population without a solution that fits their lifestyle” said Manbir Sahni, Founder of Initium Labs and Creator of Securmate.   “You may find it interesting that according to the US Census, every year approximately 11.5 to 12.5% of the U.S. population moves residences.  With these kinds of numbers you would think a portable system would be the norm rather than an exception.  Yet that is not the case.”

Sahni added “We took it upon ourselves to rethink the design of a typical security system that usually consists of a hub, keypad, fob, power adapters and many sensors.  We minimized and re-distributed the functionality of these components in a way that the user has to carry the bare minimum without compromising the efficacy of the system.  In order to do that, we pushed most of the logic either to the cloud or to the user’s mobile leaving them with only the entrance sensor, since an intruder would have to enter a property through its entrances.  We additionally integrated a Wi-Fi modem in the entrance sensor so that it can communicate with the cloud service using the user’s preexisting Wi-Fi.  This way the user doesnot have to worry about monthly service fees and can easily relocate the system to a different place, if need be.”

The Securmate entrance sensor can be attached to a door, window, drawer or any other entrance, by means of removable double sided tapes.  The system can then be armed through the smartphone app.  When armed, if an entrance is opened or closed, a push notification will be sent to the owner’s smartphone with the Securmate app installed on it.  Preconfigured contacts in the owner’s trust circle will get emails notifications as well.  Securmate is operated by two AAA regular alkaline batteries which can last about a year.

Securmate additionally integrates with a third party service called IFTTT (which stands for, If This Then That) and can therefore interact with other popular products to automate an owner’s place of stay.  Through IFTTT, Securmate provides rule based events that can be used to control smart plugs, lights, thermostats, cameras and other smart devices allowing owners to construct home automation use cases.

Sahni further explained “Another powerful aspect of Securmate is unleashed when used with IFTTT.  We allow qualifying a change in the state of an entrance with the time of day and other knobs to create powerful scenarios called applets in IFTTT-speak.  Say a user wakes up between 6:00 am and 8:00 am – if their bedroom door opens in that timeframe, that event can be used as a trigger to turn on their coffee machine, adjust their thermostat or for triggering other aspects of their morning routine.  Similarly Securmate can be used to turn off lights when a user leaves their home for work or blink their porch light red when their door is opened while the system is armed.  In fact the possibilities are endless and it is all very simple to setup as well.  This way a customer doesn’t have to be boxed into what a Security product company offers them but instead they get to build and configure the system around their lifestyle.”

Thus through the medium of a small wireless entrance sensor, the Securmate system is not just able to provide the essential security needs for its owner but also provides functionality to automate their lives – making Securmate a very compelling security and automation solution.

Initium Labs has undergone more than a couple of years of R&D from conception of Securmate to manufacturing its first batch.  Devices from the first batch of manufacturing will be delivered to early supporters of the Securmate Kickstarter campaign in July.
