New film BITTERSWEET to be directed by reknowned Filipino director Kanakan Balintagos
She’s a R&B pioneer and dynamite performer who shared the spotlight with Etta James, Howlin’ Wolf, Tina Turner, Jackie Wilson, and James Brown. Sugar Pie DeSanto is a legend in the music world. Unfortunately, not too many people, know of her music and incredible journey.
A team of filmmakers, led by award-winning director Kanakan Balintagos, (aka Auraeus Solito), hopes to change that. The documentary film “Bittersweet” will tell the compelling story of half-Filipino/half-African American singer Umpeylia Marsema Balinton, who as Sugar Pie DeSanto, thrilled audiences with her powerful voice and explosive performances.
On May 17, 2014, a crowdfunding campaign launched on Indiegogo to kickstart film production. Titled “Indiegogo…Go Go Power for Sugar Pie DeSanto,” the campaign is a play on Sugar Pie’s final recording on Chess Records, the legendary Chicago recording studio. Released in 1966, Go Go Power is a fun, upbeat R&B classic. Meant to be a community effort for Blues, R&B, and Soul lovers, the Filipino-American community, and for new generations of fans, the team seeks contributors to move this film forward.
Team “Bittersweet” is composed of Balintagos, director of the critically acclaimed “The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros” and “Busong,” producer Jong de Castro, Blues historian Jim Moore, and writer Benjamin Pimentel.
Indiegogo contributors can enjoy perks ranging from autographed film posters, music, DVDs, a private film screening, to tickets to the film’s wrap-up party, and master classes in filmmaking with Cannes, Berlin, and Sundance award-winning director Kanakan Balintagos and music with Sugar Pie herself.
