I am Prashant Mishra, Merchant Navy Officer, from Mumbai, India. I have been associated with Salaam Bombay since ages and need your help to not only educate but also help children live a tobacco free life, who are residing in the slums of Mumbai.
The first step towards development is the eradication of illiteracy in India. Help us in this initiative to provide education to these children.
Salaam Bombay Foundation’s children come from financially challenged homes. They are pressurised to seek jobs to support their families at a very young age itself; girls bear the additional burden of household chores. They go to municipal schools that don’t have the resources to give them individual attention, career guidance, or even access to the activities that stimulate their mind. Many of these children are undernourished and addicted to tobacco, which affects their performance in school which ultimately leades to a large number drop out from schools. Also, it is estimated that 9 out of 10 children drop out by the 8th grade. Salaam Bombay Foundation’s programmes focuses on helping the children stay in school by engaging them in school leadership and after school sports, arts and media programmes.
We have been associated with Harvard School of Public Health who has studied our model and found that children in Salaam Bombay’s programmes have greater ambition and 90% are confident about their future. They have higher self-esteem and confidence than their peers and 97% of our students want to continue their studies.
Salaam Bombay Foundation’s Credo is ‘A Child in School Has a Future’.
I seek your support to raise at least Rs 1,00,000/- to help 13 children of Salaam Bombay Foundation and equip them with job related skills which will definitely help them motivate to stay in school and pursue higher education/training in skills of their choice.
