HANOI – On March 11, Project Sprouts launched a crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo to raise $5,000 to help 300 students in Son La, a northern province of Vietnam, receive new backpacks filled with school supplies. Within 11 days, the 31-day campaign has raised over $4,900.

Project Sprouts began in September of 2014 with the goal of facilitating educational opportunities by minimizing barriers one student at a time. Most of the families in the Son La hillside community live on less than a $1 a day and often lack even the most basic of necessities, let alone tools for learning.

“However, our aim is to also promote sustainability. If we are able to meet our goal, we want to make an even bigger impact,” said Justin Rogers, Project Sprout’s Campaign Manager. The nonprofit aims to raise an additional $6,000 to build a four-person restroom (two toilets for girls and two for boys) for a school lacking such a facility. “This would help establish a safe and clean environment conducive to learning,” Rogers added.

Indiegogo was the crowdfunding platform of choice because it is one of the major crowdfunding platforms that people are aware of and offers a flexible funding option. It also best caters to charity fundraisers as opposed to its larger competitor Kickstarter.

“Education and a safe learning environment is the key for many of these children to escape the devastating cycle of poverty, said Rogers. “We at Project Sprouts are just trying to give a helping hand and a lift up and asking others to do the same.”
