NEW YORK — October 23, 2014 – Subscription and newsstand sales of print magazines continue to decline, but upstart 8X10 magazine is bucking the trend with efforts to reach a wider audience through a Kickstarter campaign launched by creative director Pedro Arieta. The fine art photography publication is an unbound compendium of original photographs and artworks by established and upcoming artists and photographers. Images are printed on matte card stock paper using the front face only, making it convenient for subscribers to frame and display the pages that appeal to them.
“We knew how much of print magazines go to waste, so we wanted to create something truly lasting that people would want to keep,” Arieta said. The magazine is an offshoot of a 2009 brainstorming session with a group of artists observing user trends in traditional publications. The magazine features unbound pages that come in a custom Plexiglas box so that images are display-ready for readers to frame or post as they please.
The Kickstarter campaign will raise awareness for the magazine while encouraging art enthusiasts and the art community as a whole to support this nascent publication. Supporters will receive art-related gifts from 8X10 magazine, depending on the pledged amount. Kickstarter proceeds will be used to grow the magazine’s print and digital formats.
Appreciating 8X10 magazine is both a visual and tactile experience with each page presented as a pull out artwork that can be examined closely. “Each page, by itself, is a beautiful work of art from a recognized or rising artist. The magazine seeks to evoke an intimate art encounter between readers and artists,” according to Arieta. Image themes include high fashion photographs, paintings, drawings and sculptures. Artists whose works have been part of 8X10’s collection include Noritoshi Hirakawa, Pamela Pecchio, Joseph Maida, Monika Sziladi, Fia Backstrom, and Sigurjon Gudjonson.
The magazine’s creative team led by Arieta is constantly seeking out artists whose works show the kind of unique edginess that defines 8X10 magazine. Online submissions and portfolio reviews along with recommendations from curators, academics and gallery owners have also provided leads to promising artists.
Arieta himself is a multi-awarded photographer and product of the School of Visual Arts in New York, the Pan-American School of Arts and the Brazilian Academy of Arts in Brazil. He has exhibited extensively all over the U.S and in Brazil.
