Thousands of returning veterans need a new direction. Millions of bellies need food. One Army veteran and his family reach out to offer a comprehensive “Farm Kitchen Education”.
Ann Arbor, MI to Asheville, NC -November 3, 2014 A growing veteran retraining movement urges veterans to consider agriculture as their new vocation. Organizations such as Farmer Veteran Coalition lead the surge, with valuable tools and resources available for veterans. A new documentary film and social action campaign, “Ground Operations: Battlefields to Farm Fields” raises public awareness of this movement by screening in community venues throughout the nation.
One veteran-turned-chef-turned-farmer plans a new Farm Kitchen project with Veterans specifically in mind.
Dylan Stockman, of StockWild Gardens trained as a cook in the US Army. After the Army, he cooked in many Seattle restaurants, eventually launching his own culinary endeavor, GreenGo Food. Economic turmoil in 2009, along with a desire to return to his rural roots led Dylan and his family to pull stakes and temporarily live a transient farmworker existence.
“My military experience prepared me so well for the active, hard working life of a farmer.” says Stockman, “We had a saying in the field, ‘improvise, adapt, overcome’ which provides great operating instructions for the farm field.”
After five years of working on different types of farm and food projects, Dylan and his family have launched a campaign on Indiegogo.com to fund their educational Farm Kitchen for Veterans.
Stockman says, “This campaign should be very exciting because supporters will be updated with real progress as we search for a farm during the campaign and actually move to the farm within the next couple months”.
Dylan’s wife, Heidi manages the household and family business. She adds the following, “We have been so fortunate to have learned from great mentors, attended such inspiring classes as The Quillisascut Farm School, and now logged our 10,000 hours; it feels imperative that we share this accumulated experience and help people get growing and hoeing.”
