What’s an Electroluminescent Helmet Kit?

Physically it’s two 1/2″ by 18″ strips thinner than a credit card that can be easily applied to the flat surface of a bicycle, motorcycle, safety or just about any helmet to give the wearer 360 degree low light visibility.

Anyone who’s ever ridden a bike or a motorcycle on city streets at night knows visibility is your first line of defense against motorists.
The goal of making the EL Helmet Kit was to make this amazing technology easy to use and put it all together in a kit that will work on just about any bicycle or motorcycle helmet.

Electroluminescent or ‘EL’ lighting technology has been around for a half century. Chrysler was using it in dashboards in the 1960’s. The US Air Force has replaced incandescent lighting with Electroluminescent lights on it’s runways in extreme environments. Under testing they were found to be more power efficient, highly durable, long lasting and were visible at four times the distance of incandescent lighting (https://www.dropbox.com/s/od65a98xtx1ilei/TD%20USAF%20Electroluminescent%20Lighting%20Applications%20USAF.pdf).
Similar ‘EL Wire’ kits with battery packs have been in use for years at events like Burning Man. Why? Visibility. So you don’t get run over, and because it looks super cool!

The fairly recent availability of EL in preformed tape and panel configurations make it many times more visible than in the wire form. Naturally this technology could and should be used on the road.
