Divergir, or at what point did you start to fall into the void, is a film adaptation of the theater play Divergir, premiered in México last year. Set in the year 2150, in the city of Los Angeles, California, we find ourselves in a dystopic world where society has advanced to the point of eliminating art as we know it. The only thing that managed to survive is the Hollywood industry. Everything that used to be art now only serves to complement that industry. Los Angeles is at a critical point. Downtown LA has completely become a garbage dump, but of art. And they have no idea. The Homeless sings their operas while the night sweeps away those who resist their clandestine ways. The Nights are inhabited by those who in their lives the word invisible has reached a higher level of meaning. Claudia is one of them. The film is set in one the few places where those who live marginalized in this dump can express themselves. It is here where our character fights against herself and her fears to find the reason of her conflicts.
Claudia is a person that life has turned its back on. An invisible being. Stuck in time, in her father’s cabin far away from everything; she lived her childhood under the regime of an abusive, violent father. A father that never said a single word to her and ended up abandoning her. The only thing Claudia knew of the world was through the radio and the only movie she had at home, a movie starring the great Joan Crawford, her favorite actress. With the dream of being like her, of being an actress, she moves to the city. After many attempts to emerge in Mexico City, she decides to head to Los Angeles. This is where her career fails. Under the disappointment of her dreams and the torment caused by the extreme violence she lived, Claudia seeks liberation between the abandoned spaces in the city.
“Divergir” is born from the homonymous work written by the playwright and director Aníbal Perramont, who produces this film adaptation. The theatrical material contains a multitude of powerful and violent images with a performance pushed to the limit, of sudden changes, abstractions, and extreme emotional intensities. The viewer is taken through a journey of emotions and sensations, into a storm that takes them and attacks their being. The cinematographic material seeks to maintain the essence and intensity of the work, through a translation of theatrical images to an audiovisual universe of a different reality. Keeping in line with the extreme character which the theatrical montage has. We want to make a unique and very peculiar product. Using a sole actress, accompanied by extras, with musical support can soften the film so it can help the viewer introduce himself into the universe. We hope with a small production that we can achieve something great. The color palette is very interesting, just like the photography. We believe faithfully that it will be a fun process and a risky proposition, within the independent cinema, we believe that there is nothing like it.
For us as independent production and artists, it is difficult to finance this type of project. There are several ideas that come up that cannot be done without the support of the community. The multitude and complexity of the sets, the lighting, the equipment, and extras mean a high cost for production. But we believe the images that we seek to arrive at, the scenes and moments that make up this production are essential. This is why we need your help to achieve our goal. Of course, everything has its benefit; for your contribution, you can receive official merchandise, unpublished photographs of the movie, digital and physical copies of both the film as well as its original score, materials signed by the team, film props, mentions in the credits, and even the possibility to participate as an extra.
Most of the packages are available internationally, except for those that require a presence in Mexico. All the proceeds will go to finance the production and development costs of the film. We hope we can count on your help so we can together open a window into this complex universe we have created. www.kickstarter.com
