Richland, WA — Red Level Games, a Washington-based game development company, has gained support from six continents around the world for an online crowdfunding campaign for its ambitious development of Dragon: The Game.
“Experience dragons in their proper role as the monstrous, complex, and epic protagonists that they are. In this open world action role-playing game, you bring your dragon’s story to life,” the creators explain, “As you hunt, eat, and age, your dragon develops. You improve and customize its wings, tail, claws, and breath weapon. Over the centuries, you develop your inner draconic magic and other latent abilities, claim territory, and impact the course of history.”
In gaming terms, Dragon is a huge open world sandbox roleplaying game in which players are the dragon. An immersive, multiplayer “dragon simulator,” Dragon is a huge project for a small, local company. Red Level Games has been developing the game for almost a year and a half already and has sold more than 12,000 copies of their working prototype to excited fans in more than 30 countries. Their founder and native Tri-citian, Grant Williams, is using Kickstarter, an online crowdfunding website to help accelerate development and hire more employees.
“Every pledge comes from people who will play our game. It gives us feedback to help us create the game the community wants, while also helping our small development company get enough support to complete a game as technically complicated as Dragon. Crowdfunding helps us make a difficult game while remaining an independent studio,” says Williams.
Traditionally, taking on such a big project would require a company much bigger than a local startup. According to Williams, however, “By inviting future players from around the world to take part in the creation of quest ideas and create individual dragons, Dragon is becoming more a combination of what gamers around the world want with what small, local developers can do. It’s an exciting time for our company.”
The Kickstarter campaign for Dragon: The Game has reached 87% of its funding goal of $30,000 with four days to go, from over 20,000 visits originating from over a hundred countries on six continents. If the goal is surpassed, additional features will be developed. With proper funding and a successful campaign, Dragon: The Game is currently scheduled for completion for December of this year, but you can already take part in playing it while it develops.
