Comic Books and Anxiety Collide in Issues, a New Web Series

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Slacker Films is proud to present the launch of their Kickstarter campaign for brand new web series “Issues” written and directed by up and coming creator Matt Wade. Issues tells the story of Scott Barnes, a comic book store owner who suffers from social anxiety.

“We’re trying to put together a series that focuses on good storytelling above all else,” says creator Matt Wade. “Just because we’re a web series doesn’t mean we can’t tell a complete story that also develops characters and still manages to squeeze in a ton of jokes and pop culture references.”

To differentiate between other similar stories, Issues is trying to do something that, while not unique, is a more ambitious way of structuring episode. Each storyline plays across two episodes, with the first part ending in a cliffhanger. “It’s kind of like the old Batman series that way,” adds producer Heidi Schlosser. “It gives viewers an incentive to come back next week to see how it ends.”

Season one consists of four storylines across eight episodes.

Episodes 1 and 2: Scott Barnes owns a small comic book store named Back Issues, where he exudes confidence and rules over the geeks that work and shop there. Outside of those comic-lined walls he suffers from debilitating social anxiety. Business is running smoothly until he realizes that he doesn’t have a vendor table for an upcoming comic convention, jeopardizing the financial future of the shop.

Episodes 3 and 4: After upsetting a group of local Star Trek fans, Scott finds that his shop is the target of overly vocal Trekkie protestors. Will a militant group of Star Wars fans known as the Black Banthas prove to be Scott’s saviors or a brand new fresh hell?

Episodes 5 and 6: When a hipster bar opens next door to Back Issues the geek guys go crazy over the hipster girls that pretend to love comics, gaming and anime. But when the hardcore geek girls find themselves being passed up in favor of these fake lipstick geeks they mount an offensive to expose the hipsters and win back their men. And what side will Scott pick when he finds himself smitten by the bar’s cute proprietor?

Episodes 7 and 8: While waiting in line for the launch of a new game system, the gang finds that adventure can be had in the most boring of places. Will loyalty, friendship, and withstanding the need to urinate be enough to overcome the horror of the line?

Shooting in late September Issues is scheduled to start hitting the web in December.

“Please help spread the word about Issues,” adds Matt. “We have a great crew and really want to tell solid, funny stories. Anything you can do to help out will be greatly appreciated. Without your help our Kickstarter will never succeed. Thanks for checking us out.”
