Thinking outside the box, Texas-based children’s publisher hopes to raise $15,000 to bring its next season catalog of titles to consumers, help keep the lights on during disruptions to manufacturing, distribution, and shipping partners.

Fort Worth, TX — On June 30, Little Lamb Books, a premiere children’s book publisher, launched on crowdfunding site Kickstarter. Led by founder and publisher, Rachel Pellegrino, Little Lamb Books has been faced with the same difficult decision as many other local businesses: Find a way to stay open or close down indefinitely. It chose an all or nothing approach. They launched their Kickstarter page on Tuesday, June 30, and raised over 15% of their goal in the first 48 hours.

Rachel Pellegrino, founder and publisher of the company, said, “It’s been a whirlwind to bring the campaign on Kickstarter to life. But, after applying for all the small business opportunities and initially not getting funding, we had to find a new way to keep the company afloat and get our books in the hands of children.”

The publishing industry has been ravaged by the COVID-19 pandemic and everything from manufacturing plants to distribution companies and printing facilities have been impacted. Little Lamb Books, a faith-based press from Tarrant County, already had several titles in production and had to move release dates for at least three of their titles to 2021. Pellegrino, who launched the company in 2015 and their debut picture book in 2016, couldn’t watch the press she had sunk her life savings into just vanish.

Pellegrino commented, “There was no easy answer, but I couldn’t just sit there and hope for a change to the situation. After much prayer and listening to other publishers during roundtable discussions, I decided we needed to pivot and focus on raising the funds ourselves. Kickstarter was offering small businesses an opportunity to utilize their platform for a Lights On campaign and I decided it was a great option for us.”

While Texas is now considered a hot spot for the virus, the faith-based company launched virtually from their home base in Tarrant County. In exchange for pledging to the campaign, backers can gain access to various rewards including receiving a soft cover book bundle of their current titles while donating a book bundle to the non-profit of their choice. Backers can also pledge to receive art prints, t-shirts, travel mugs, and more.

You can back Little Lamb Books on their Kickstarter page now through August 4, 2020. Delivery of rewards will start one month after the campaign ends just in time for backers to receive items for Christmas.
