The classic Jewish holiday Chanukah has one overlooked aspect: The Maccabees. This band of heroes managed to defeat the Syrian-Greek army, recapture the Jewish Temple and rededicate the Menorah. Their story has not received enough recognition. Chanukah typically focuses on the miracle of the menorah that burned for eight days. The miracle is featured in all educational material regarding Chanukah. The retelling of the Chanukah story to children also largely leaves out the Maccabees.

The Maccabees are important for many reasons. As defenders of Judaism against Hellenization they are faced with a unique challenge. They have to decide to what extent they are willing to defend their faith. They are willing to kill traitorous fellow Jews to stop Jewish assimilation. But they are not willing to violate the Sabbath to defend themselves from attack. Is this religious fanaticism or a reasonable defense of one’s faith?

On the other hand the Maccabees remain a strong example of Jewish strength, heroism and courage. Militarily, the odds are against the Maccabees from the beginning. The Greek army of the 2nd century B.C.E. is an imperial fighting machine with battle-tried warriors, experienced commanders, superior weapons, chariotry and combat elephants.

Nevertheless, the Maccabees overcome the Greeks by tactics and home advantage. The Maccabees know the land of Judea better than the Greeks do. They also have the strong conviction that their deity is with them. Most important of all, the Maccabees know their survival as a people depends on their success in battle.
