February 4, 2015 – San Jose, CA – CarVi is launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.com to bring to market real time safety gizmos currently available only in luxury cars.
The technology startup from Silicon Valley has joined the Internet of Things for automotive movement currently dominated by global corporations like Toyota, Mercedes, Apple and Google. It offers an affordable and easy to install gadget which can be placed in any car, old or new.
CarVi uses a small dashboard camera installed in a car that “talks” to a driver’s smartphone. The camera captures video which CarVi analyzes in real time and issues audible and visual warnings in case of danger.
It monitors lane changes, a distance from a car in front, reckless driving, jackrabbit starts and other dangerous habits most drivers don’t even notice they have. CarVi also works as an instructor. The camera records the driving data, and shows it on a smartphone providing a “SKOR” for a day and suggestions on how to improve your driving skills.
Considering the fact that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for US teens, the parents of new drivers are one of the main target groups for the company. Currently, 1 in 5 of 16-year-old drivers have been involved in an accident within their first year of driving. CarVi founders believe they can change that.
The gizmo will bring a peace of mind to anyone who wants to improve the safety on the road for themselves, their families and neighbors. “Our parents are at higher risk of getting into a car accident due to a slower reaction and reduced vision. Our kids are increasingly distracted by smartphones and are in danger due to lack of experience. We want to protect all of them and use the power of technology to guard you on the road making driving less stressful,” said Kevin Lee, a co-founder of CarVi.
The Internet of Things was in the center of attention at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and The International Auto Show in Detroit. Major car makers spend nearly $100 billion annually on R&D. The research firm Gartner foresees 250M new connected vehicles to hit the road by 2020. One of the top three things the buyers of new cars are looking for is the safety features.
CarVi founders want ordinary Joes to be able to use it this year without spending tens of thousands of dollars on buying a new car. The backers of the Indiegogo campaign have an opportunity to pre-order the gizmo starting at $249.
