What goes best with a fine brew and keeps those timber tabletops safe from being damaged? A carbon fibre coaster of course! An evocative material, worth getting emotional over and a reminder of the intrinsic high performance mechanical properties this material delivers.
We wanted to develop an aesthetically pleasing, yet functional cup holder for the bike (or pram), allowing the rider to maintain safe operation of their bike with both hands on the handlebar and brakes.
This project started out to solve a problem for mates and family to get to and from the café, without falling off their bike because they were holding a coffee. An elegant solution was needed in this modern era, as more people took to riding their bikes instead of driving during lockdowns (COVID-19 Pandemic).
We wanted to make it a minimalist accessory, that wouldn’t be obtrusive on an already crowded handlebar. Catering for a wide variety of cups, in particular reusable cups, the cup holder had to also withstand dynamic forces experienced during riding. With our expertise in carbon fibre composite materials, we found a niche that would offer a slim profile with a high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio, but also dampening vibrations to lessen the force on the cup and contents.
