Waiting for an elaborate cocktail to be poured can seem like an eternity for thirsty party-goers. But queuing patiently at the bar could soon be a thing of the past thanks to two fledgling inventors from South Wales.
Cardiff University graduates Alun King and Chris Whitcombe have developed a cocktail-making robot that mixes drinks at the touch of a button. The aptly-named “BoozeBot” allows punters to create their own cocktails in bars or at home without the need for recipes, measuring tools and mixing equipment.
Now, five years after first floating the idea, Alun and Chris are ready to introduce their revolutionary invention to the public. “The Boozebot has been a while in the making, but it has real potential to take the drinks market by storm,” said Alun, a college lecturer in Crosskeys.
“All you need to do is connect your ingredients and the BoozeBot will work out what cocktails it can make, then display them for you to select and pour.” The idea for the BoozeBot was born during a night out in Cardiff five years ago, when university pals Alun and Chris were fed up of waiting to get served. Not content with the time wasted making a cocktail, the 28 year olds took it upon themselves to make life easier for busy bar men and women.
“I remember us both being at a bar queuing for drinks,” said Alun, who lives in Pontywaun. “We soon realised the slow queue was because of the time it takes to mix and pour a cocktail at a bar compared to any other drink.
“We’re both into computers and technology, so Chris and I looked at making our own automated cocktail dispenser. Several prototypes later, we landed on the BoozeBot.”
The BoozeBot comes with a regularly-updated library of more than 4500 cocktails. It allows users to vary the strength of their drinks and gives party-goers the option of creating and storing their own unique blend of beverage.
BoozeBots are powered by the credit card sized Raspberry Pi computer, and come with an intuitive touch screen interface. They feature high-quality images and access to all software features means they can be used via a tablet or smartphone.
