Carmel-by-the-Sea, United States — Husband and wife team, Andrew Smith and Denise Coates are excited to announce the launch of an Indiegogo campaign for their film, ‘Becoming A Hero’, the fastest growing independent film on Indiegogo!
“Part of the film is old school stop-motion animation; thus, we are aiming to keep the art of Stop-Motion Animation alive!” the creators explain, “Also, the film deals with destigmatizing anxiety (the main character, Liv, has agoraphobia) and deals with children’s cancer, which is why 5% of all money we are raising goes to the Make-A-Wish foundation.”
‘Becoming A Hero’ is about a successful children’s author who has agoraphobia and severe writer’s block. She is approached by a young boy with cancer whose wish is to find out how the final book in her series ends. We journey into that book through stop-motion animation (namely old school Claymation). The two stories parallel one another as we follow young Prince Kenway as he battles the evil Lord Moloch to save his kingdom.
“Our cast is mostly women and we are hiring as many women as we can for our crew and art departments, including our composer. I am the screenwriter and director and I am a woman,” says Coates, “It’s a really important time for female filmmakers to have a voice and be heard and I am very committed to helping other female filmmakers.”

The creators will be implementing a unique voting system for this crowdfunding campaign where backers will be an integral part of the filmmaking process. Backers will make key production decisions all throughout the shoot, by using creative votes earned when they support the project.
In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards including streaming access and 5 creative votes to use during the production of the movie for $25, a DVD/Blu-ray, streaming access, and 6 creative votes for $35, and more. Backers can also pledge $225 for two invitations to the L.A. premier or $1,000 to voice a stop-motion character in the movie.
