New Orleans, LA – On March 17 2015, Jed Malitz launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Ultimate Sacrifice, a series of three glass sculptures portraying Jesus as light on Via Dolorosa, His Crucifixion and Resurrection.
“I wish to depict three significant biblical events through monumental glass sculptures and their redirected light. These sculptures will be spiritually moving, unparalleled in their beauty and unique in the art world,” Malitz shares, “One of these three sculptures, depicting The Crucifixion, has already been completed as a proof of concept.”
“When visitors to my gallery see a depiction of His floating body, appearing to be made entirely of light and without any flesh, some have cried, some have frozen in amazement, and some have lingered in silence for many minutes, observing the artwork from every angle,” says Malitz, “Through Kickstarter I hope to create the two remaining glass sculptures that will depict Him on Via Dolorosa and The Resurrection.”
Malitz has created a new form of sculpture that uses 3D cut glass and light to simultaneously depict both the human subject and their soul. Depending on the visitor’s angle of view, they will either see Christ depicted through 3D silhouettes of glass, or see Him depicted through refracted light, or both depictions at the same time. The artist has successfully completed 5 glass sculptures in the past. The finished sculptures will remain in the artist’s gallery for public viewing until permanent placements are found for them.
In exchange for pledging to the project, backers can gain access to a variety of rewards including paper or metal prints of photos taken of the sculptures, a private catered dinner for two with the artist, and more. The limited edition rewards will be exclusive to this campaign.
“These photographs will be impossible for visitors to take without a studio setup around the sculptures (including backdrops, camera hides, strobes, lighting adjustments, etc.),” Malitz explains.
